911 Caller Reports Drunk Driver in Southbury

This weekend a woman from Woodbridge was arrested and charged with DUI in Southbury, CT after the police received a phone tip regarding a potential drunk driver.  The caller indicated that the driver was swerving all over the road.

The law regarding the police use of 911 calls regarding suspected drunk drivers has changed considerably in recent years.  After the United States Supreme Court decision in Navarette v. California in 2014, the police have much greater latitude to act on 911 calls to effectuate motor vehicle stops of suspected drunk drivers.  Prior to the Navarette decision, the police were typically required to corroborate at least some aspects of the callers information prior to detaining the motorist.  After the decision, the police can generally stop the vehicle without first corroborating the callers information.
